Keeping Your Kitchen Clean And Clear

Keeping Your Kitchen Clean And Clear

We’ve said it before here on the Kitchen Design blog and we’ll say it again; cleanliness is close to godliness – and that definitely goes in the kitchen. It might be a chore, it might not be as fun as making the mess in the first place, but there are some great tips you can try to keep your space as clean as possible.

For starters, keeping your work surfaces clear is a big bonus. If you’ve got somewhere to stash the toaster, a draw for your utensils and a cupboard for your various herbs and spices – get them put away.

Here at My Beautiful Kitchen, we design a variety of kitchen storage units to help keep those work surfaces clear. You’d be amazed how much better your kitchen will look once all the clutter is out of sight. This works particularly well for open plan living, as the look of the kitchen can really affect the entire space. An untidy kitchen makes for an untidy lounge, but thankfully that works both ways.

Next, clean as you go. It might take a little practice, but if you keep in mind this handy little mantra, you’ll find that there’s much less to do once you’ve finished enjoying the meal you spent the last hour making. Half fill the sink with soapy water and try to wash a few bits up as you’re cooking. Trust us, you’ll be grateful for a smaller pile of dishes later on.

There’s always the option of a dishwasher. They actually use less water than washing by hand, and they’re great for keeping your dirty dishes out of sight; even if you’re not running a load yet. You don’t even have to put them on show – there are plenty of integrated models out there which will fit right into the look of your kitchen. It’s definitely something to consider.

It doesn’t hurt to keep a dishcloth or sponge on hand either, so if you do make any spills while preparing your meal, it’s much easier to wipe up. It’ll certainly save you reaching for the heavy-duty kitchen cleaners all the time, as well as the extra elbow grease you’ll need to shift it.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with using a kitchen cleaner to give the whole space a good going over from time to time. If you’ve been frying or cooking with oil, you can sometimes find a light greasy film appearing over your work surface around the hob. A few squirts of a spray and you’ll cut right through it.

If you’re noticing this greasy film a bit more often than you should check your cooker hood. It could be that the paper filter needs changing or the metallic grease filter needs cleaning out. You can either soak the metal ones in the sink or run them through the dishwasher.

Doing this about once a month should be enough to keep them running smoothly.

Hopefully, there are enough tips here to make a difference in your kitchen – give them a try and see how easy it is to keep your cooking space looking its best.
