Go Eco And Save Money
Are you thinking of forking out for a new kitchen? Are you comparing quality and price to ensure you are 100% satisfied with the end result?
Buying a new kitchen can be a costly decision and many customers will shop around to make sure they are getting the best possible deal on the market.
But what about the ongoing costs? Did you know that fridges and freezers account for up to 20% of your electricity bills? With energy costs at an all time high can you afford to be running low performance white goods?
Since July all fridges and freezers have to rate grade A or above but this can be misleading, as there are still vast differences in the appliance performance.
Cheap options in the showroom may not represent overall good value for money. Selecting the best of breed model may mean a saving of up to £100 per year. So whether you are buying an oven, washing machine or simply a kettle, you need to do your homework first.
The good news is that help is at hand. Consumer advice reports run by independent companies offer detailed reviews to help consumers make an informed decision. The consumer agency Which offer clear information on the performance of products they have tested. It could not be clearer with their easy symbol and ratings system. For example:
Best Buy – Does exactly what is says on the tin.
Don´t Buy – Unlike many agencies Which tell the customer exactly what they need to know and if a product isn´t up to scratch, Which say so.
Warning, Poor Satisfaction – Naming and shaming companies whose products are just not up to the job!
Energy Saver – After numerous energy saving tests, this rating is only given to the best of the best.
Worth a Look – not quite a top notch product but still better than many others in its class.
Once you have bought the correct product for your kitchen there are a few further simple steps to make sure you keep your costs down. Here are just a few for you to try.
Fridges and Freezers
- Defrost frozen food in your fridge, as it will keep the temperature cool and reduce the amount of electricity needed.
- Defrost fridges and freezers regularly to ensure they are in good working order.
- Do not keep the fridge door open for lengthy periods of time as this makes the appliance work harder.
Tumble Dryers
- Only use when necessary – tumble dryers are expensive to run and consume a lot of energy.
- Dry naturally where possible.
- Check the efficiency of your product.
Kettles
- Only boil the amount of water you require.
- Consider boiling on the hob – gas is cheaper than electricity and savings can be made.
- Buy an eco kettle which gives the user better control over how much water they are actually boiling.
Remember, small savings add up when calculated on a yearly basis so make sure you are not running up unnecessary bills.
